A great idea for a compilation which was sadly spoilt by the inclusion of the Nat King Cole track as a later stereo re-recording, rather than the original. Pity this wasn’t noticed before release. I’m also a bit puzzled by the inclusion of the title track by Bing Crosby, which wasn’t on the first chart (or any subsequent record chart in the UK).
ReplyDeleteSorry you found the Nat 'King' Cole track upsetting. It is indeed the 1960 rerecording which was used, but to be fair to RD, they don't make any claims that the collection is in 'original mono', and the stereo version is far superior in sound quality. The title track by Bing (actually "At Last! At Last!"), not only made a suitable title for the collection, but was indeed on the first chart as a 'Double A-side' as originally intended by the record label ('ALAL' having a lower matrix number) and explained within the booklet. At the time, both sides were as popular as each other in the UK, with 'At Last' taking the official 'A' side in France, Canada and some parts of the US (where this set was intended to be issued). The song also featured heavily in his radio appearances of the period.
