By
1999, the most profitable part of Reader’s Digest music in the UK was
the series business. A huge promotion was put into the first volume of the
series, and then the customers would receive a new volume every two months until
the figures dropped too low to make the series profitable (normally between 10
to 15 volumes). The concepts were researched, and it looked like the series
‘Music & Memories Of The 30s & 40s’ would make the most profit. Not
only were the usual processes of easy sales with less promotion, in place, but,
in theory, the recordings would all be out of copyright, and therefore cheaper
to obtain. Obviously the one’s holding the ‘purse strings’ failed to allow for
the extra time and expense of actually obtaining these ancient recordings (and
the costs of cleaning them up from old, scratched, 78 shellac discs), but they
also failed to realise that using recordings, once owned by the major record
labels, would upset future licensing arrangements with these companies. None the
less, the series went ahead and it was eventually agreed that RD would pay full
licensing fees on all the recordings, even though, at the time, legally, it was
not necessary. Promotion stressed that it could be the ‘last chance’ to
obtain these recordings, (the actual truth was it was the last time, most
people would ever want them) the most popular recordings were actually
re-issued by the record company owners therefore circumnavigating the rules
around copyright, and so are still available today. Delayed, because of the
problems previously mentioned, the series was delivered quite eratically, and
so failed to last as long as maybe it could have done. However this collection became a fine, unique, series of recordings from the period, and along with fascinating
booklet notes by writer Tony Watts, become a highly collectable set of recordings. it did also however, become the last RD
series to be worked on by myself, fellow compiler and good friend, Bill
Salthouse, Engineer and Producer extraordinaire, Paddy Marchant, as well as
being the only series worked on by consultant Colin Brown, whose career as a
producer of records for Pye, President and Phillips and compiler for Decca,
Empress and Rex, was invaluable in creating the series.

Originally, to this point, series had been released in ‘strength of concept’ order based on research, my suggestion that a ‘weaker’ concept led the initial promotional push, so that the stronger following concepts would encourage the collector mentality and slow down drop off from the series proved highly successful and was used on all future series.
As with other series, some titles were also eventually promoted and sold as individual albums within the catalogues.

Interesting series. Did you actually use original master sources where they were available? Many American masters have survived for music from this period. The British masters are far less likely to exist, especially for Decca material.
ReplyDeleteYes. Wherever possible, original master sources were used, as supplied by the record companies. Of course, many were not available, in which case we used licensed import or UK CD releases, and occasionally original 78s. Whatever gave us the highest quality really! But all were licensed from the original companies, as that was part of the contract that was made with them.
